Create a School Packet

Every family of a child with HAE has questions at the start of the school year. How will the school respond if my child misses too many days of school? How will my child make up missed assignments? An HAE school packet can be a great resource for you and your child's school. Preparing the packet ahead of time will help decrease stress and provide answers to the school staff.

Educate the School Nurse about HAE

Chances are your school nurse has never heard of HAE. A letter providing a brief introduction to HAE, an idea of what is needed if medical intervention is necessary, and emergency contact information can be a great help to you and the school. Parents should authorize contact between school health staff and your child's HAE physician, and a dedicated medication supply should remain with the school nurse.

Consider Creating a 504 Plan

504 plans are formal plans that schools develop to give kids with certain disabilities or conditions, like HAE, the support they need and prevent discrimination. Consider meeting with the school to develop an accommodations plan for your child.

Sydney
"The Pam King HAEA scholarship has lightened the financial burden of college and allowed me to attend the school of my dreams. It has also provided opportunities for me to get more involved in HAEA and meet other college students and children with Hereditary Angioedema. I am so thankful for their generosity and interest in getting more people involved and giving back to our special community."
– Sydney, Texas Christian University
How to Apply

The Pam King HAEA Scholarship Program is available to US citizens with a confirmed HAE diagnosis (a letter from a licensed physician is required) who will be enrolled or are enrolled in an undergraduate educational institution. We also offer the scholarship to graduate and vocational students on a case-by-case basis. Your application will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, an independent adjudicatory board with no HAEA affiliation. Scholarships will be awarded based on a combination of financial need, academic effort, and individual educational goals. Awards will be sent directly to the institution that the student is attending and (depending on the institution's financial aid policies) may be used for tuition, books, and room and board.

Applications must be submitted online using the link below. All applicants will be notified by email regarding the results of the selection process. If you are awarded a scholarship, you must complete the school contact form within 30 days of being notified or your award will be forfeited. Once your form is received, payment will be provided in the form of a check made payable to the institution attended.
